416 Universities and 20,000 Colleges across the country will be connected under NME-ICT mission
Shri NK Sinha, Additional Secretary of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, was the chief guest in the weekly discussion program through A-VIEW (Amrita Virtual Interactive E-Learning World) on 28th December 2011. Shri Sinha from MHRD’s New Delhi office explained the objectives of NME-ICT mission and the status of various projects in progress under the mission.
While interacting with the participants, Shri Sinha said the main emphasis of NME-ICT project in next plan will be content development and better connectivity apart from providing Akash tablet at a lower cost to student community.
The NME-ICT mission launched on 3rd February 2009 under 11th Five Year Plan will end on 31st March 2012.

To collaborate, submit a proposal
Answering to a question raised by SASTRA University, Shri Sinha said if a university / college is interested to collaborate with NME-ICT, submit a proposal. “We will review the proposal and notify if you are selected. Log on to http://www.sakshat.ac.in/ for more details.”
He emphasized that whatever proposals are available and still under consideration will be considered when the mission gets extended in 12th Five Year Plan. “No need of fresh submission,” he added.
Akash: No subsidy for private use
Answering to a question raised by Pondicherry University, he said interested Universities / Colleges which require Akash tablets should submit their requirements i.e. Number of Akash tablets required along with specifications immediately. 50 per cent subsidy will be given by the MHRD to all educational institutions to buy tablets for educational purposes. If a student wants to buy as a private individual for his / her own use or anyone else wants to buy tablet then this subsidy will not be available.
Akash will be available in 3G too
He pointed out that Akash tablet, now, only works over Wi-Fi connectivity. In the near future, it will be available in 3G also.
NPTEL: 988 courses available
He added that many of the courses (around 988) under NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) phase two would be available by 31st March 2012. For more details, visit - http://nptel.iitm.ac.in/
More than 60 Universities including SNDT Women's University, Jabalpur Engineering College, Punjab Technical University, Central University of Bihar, Central University of Karnataka, Goa University, Raisoni College of Engineering, Amravati, National Institute of Technology Calicut, Periyar Maniammai University, Mangalore University, Madurai Kamaraj University, Alagappa University, Barkatullah University and Indian School of Mines (ISM) participated in the online interaction.
