If you are an experienced candidate, attach your earlier works also

“Before applying to a job, students should realize that though Bio data, Resume and Curriculum Vitae sound alike, they have slight difference,” said Dr. T. P. Sethumadhavan, Academic Consultant and Officer on Special Duty, Directorate of Entrepreneurship, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Thrissur.

He was interacting with the students from various colleges across Kerala in the weekly session of Online Gurukul on April 3, 2012.

What’s Bio data, Resume & CV?

While speaking on How to apply a job, Dr. Sethumadhavan said Bio data is a summary of your personal history (birthplace, family, marital status etc). “While Resume is a blend of personal as well as professional information (it includes work experience, achievements and education). Normally, Curriculum Vitae is written in academic format (for instance, the list of project handled with a brief description).”

He underlined that to apply for a job, you need a Resume. While to apply for an academically-oriented job, Curriculum Vitae is best.

Important points you need to consider while writing Resume are given below:

  • Make sure that the information is precise and to the point
  • Don’t beat around the bush (avoid irrelevant information)
  • Do not include unnecessary details
  • Start with the most appropriate job details

Build up networks

He said majority of job openings are filled by word of mouth not mere by advertisement. So, start building relationships. “Network plays a pivotal role in grabbing a suitable job.”

Highlight your works

If you are an experienced candidate, try to send your earlier works to HR (Human Resource) Department. “If you are an Animator, send your drawings and animations while applying a job. If you have posted your works in blog, mention that link also. It will be an added advantage,” added Dr. Sethumadhavan.

Points to ponder before applying

  • Read the advertisement thoroughly
  • Ensure whether you can do the job
  • Prepare a concise resume with emphasis to achievements
  • Check the company website and identify what they expect
  • Send Resume with a Covering Letter to the concerned personnel
  • Call the employer to check whether they received your application
