Design courses to promote collaboration, communication and problem solving 13 June, 2012

Prof. A. K. Ray

Prof. A. K. Ray, Center for Educational Technology (CET), IIT Kharagpur has said education system should be more learner-centric. "Use of active learning through simulation tools, virtual labs and game based learning should be promoted in a big way," he said.

He was interacting with the participants in the National Weekly Discussion through A-VIEW envisaged by MHRD under NME-ICT on June 13, 2012.

The topic of the session was Meeting 21st century Challenges in Engineering Education – A pedagogic approach with ICT tools.

Prof. Ray has over 40 years of experience in research, design, development and teaching. Besides, he has been a consultant to UNESCO, UNDP, World Bank, member of numerous national and international committees and academic bodies.

Promote self-learning

He opined that lecture hours should be reduced and tutorial hours should be increased to discuss assignments, conduct formative evaluation, provide individual feedback and give more time for students to learn.

Platform for students

"Create a platform for students to access learning resources and interact with peers as well as mentors. Courses that promote collaboration, communication and problem solving are imperative in this century," said Prof. Ray.

Answering to a question, Prof. Ray said training large pool of faculty in pedagogy and outcomes-based learning concepts in short time is the need of the hour.
