Leadership Skills

Prof. Prabhu Ramachandran, Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Bombay was the chief guest in the National Weekly Discussions through A-VIEW envisaged by MHRD under NME-ICT mission on February 8, 2012. The topic of the session was Python for scientific computing.

While interacting with the participants, Principal Investigator of FOSSEE Prof. Prabhu said promoting FOSS (Free and Open Source Software), for Scientific and Engineering education is the main objective of the FOSSEE project at IIT-Bombay. “We promote the use of Python, one of the major FOSS tools which is very popular and easily available. The educational institutions in our country instead of using commercial packages such as Matlab and Maple, should use Python extensively in Engineering and Science curriculum,” he said.

He highlighted that Python, the high-level scripting language has simplified scientific computing. “Python nowadays is being used in a lot of scientific applications in various scientific fields and in industries. The usage of Python for high performance and parallel computing is increasing.”

What’s Python?
