Study Abroad: Prospects and Challenges

“In overseas education, the top priority is given to continuous evaluation of the students based on their performance. And it is the major advantage of it,” stated Dr. Sethumadhavan, Academic Consultant, Directorate of Entrepreneurship, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Thrissur.

He was interacting with the participants in the weekly session of Online Gurukul on June 5, 2012.

The topic of the session was Study Abroad: Prospects and Challenges.

Global exposure

Dr. Sethumadhavan pointed out that overseas education system differs a lot from Indian education scenario. “In India the emphasis is on theoretical teaching and exams, while in abroad the focus is on skill development, group discussions, practical sessions and presentations.”

Plan it properly

Overseas education is being considered as the prerequisite for getting a lucrative job. “Even though overseas education has better prospects, series of processes are needed for getting admission abroad. One year planning and evaluation is must to fulfill the foreign dream,” said Dr. Sethumadhavan.

He added that academic excellence, global edge in faculty and students, flexible curricula, cutting edge technology, hands on training, financial assistance, research opportunities etc are some of the major advantages of overseas education.

Selection criteria depend on the following parameters:

Financial aid

Answering to a question, Dr. Sethumadhavan said studying abroad might not be expensive, if you plan it well. “Numerous universities and colleges offer financial aid in the form of awards, scholarships, fellowships, tuition waivers, teaching and research assistantships,” he said.


Around 10 colleges attended the online session.
