Virtual Lab will boost up Chemistry education

Dr. Zeena S. Pillai, Assistant Professor and Chairperson, Department of Chemistry, Amrita School of Arts and Sciences, Amritapuri, Kollam was the chief guest in the National Weekly Discussions through A-VIEW envisaged by MHRD under NME-ICT mission on March 14, 2012.

The topic of the session was – An Introduction to Chemistry Virtual Labs.

Virtual Lab

While interacting with the participants, Dr. Zeena said that Virtual Lab is an interactive learning environment which allows the user to access and conduct simulated and remote triggered experiments. “The key objective of the lab is to provide a complete Learning Management System for students for learning through video, animation, demonstration etc.”

She highlighted that laboratory experience is an integral part of chemistry education and it would help to groom quality chemists.

Easy access

Answering to a question, she said virtual labs do not require any additional infrastructural setup at the user‘s premises. “You can use Virtual Lab if you have a Personal Computer supported with good broadband internet connection.”

Amrita Lab

Amrita University is part of a consortium of twelve institutions to build over 200 virtual labs covering nine key subjects in Science and Engineering. Around 30 Universities including Sir Padampat Singhania University (SPSU), Kachchh University, Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, IASE University, KIIT University, Chitkara University, Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Punjab Technical University and Viavesvaraya Techological University participated.

A-VIEW is an E-Learning platform, developed by Amrita University's E-Learning Research Lab, which is a state-of-the-art software for distance education and collaboration.
