"To study abroad, success in English language proficiency tests is very crucial. If you are passionate, proper planning and preparation are must for proficiency tests. Because it is the pathway to overseas education," said eminent career expert Dr. T. P. Sethumadhavan, Academic Consultant, Directorate of Entrepreneurship, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Thrissur.

He was interacting with the participants as part of the weekly session of Online Gurukul on June 12, 2012.

While speaking about Proficiency Tests and Procedures, he explained "One has to win key proficiency tests such as IELTS (International English Language Testing System), TOEFL (Test of English a Foreign Language), FLE (French as a Foreign Language), SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test), GRE (Graduate Record Examination) and TSE (Test of Spoken English) as the case may be to achieve his / her dream - higher education at abroad."


IELTS is the English Proficiency Examination required for educational programmes in North America, UK, EU, Canada and other developed countries. IELTS is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), British Council and IELTS Australia. There are more than 300 centres in over 100 countries. TOEFL is required for higher education in United States. Here the ability to read, write, hear and speak English in the University classroom is tested. Scores will be posted online within two weeks after the exam. ETS (Educational Testing Service) offers several test preparation resources to help the students. GRE is essential doing graduate programmes in United States. Educational Testing Service (ETS) has decided to accept GRE scores for admission to Business schools. More than 150 business schools in USA, UK and Canada are ready to accept GRE scores for the admission process. Visit www.gre.org

There are two types of GRE.viz; Generalized and Specialized. Generalized GRE comprises of three tests like Analytical Writing, Verbal reasoning and Quantitative reasoning. Fee for GRE generalized test will be 190 US dollars. For re-scheduling and changing test centre 50 dollars are required.


SAT is required for doing undergraduate programme in developed countries like USA, UK, Canada, etc. TOEFL/IELTS is required for admission along with SAT. Visit www.sat.org

Answering to a question, Dr. Sethumadhavan said SAT is mandatory for undergraduate courses in UK, USA and Canada.
