Utilize NME-ICT to generate quality content

Prof. K Mangala Sunder, Department of Chemistry, IIT Madras was the chief guest in the National Weekly Discussions through A-VIEW envisaged by MHRD under NME-ICT mission on March 28, 2012.

“Two thrust areas of NME-ICT are - To provide interactive knowledge modules over the internet / intranet to undergraduate students countrywide and equip every college and university in the country with broadband connectivity,” he said.

Prof. Mangala Sunder, who is one of the national coordinators for NPTEL and a member of the Standing Committee for NME-ICT, underlined that NPTEL will be the largest video repository of technical lecture-courses in the world in the streaming video format. He added that the course contents will be useful for teacher training and to improve the quality of students. Everyone can freely access the course materials both web and video. “Through NPTEL, high-quality content can be accessed by thousands of students in Engineering and Science. And, all educational institutions try to utilize NME-ICT mission to create quality content,” he added.

The National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NME-ICT) has proposed 18 different line items for content creation. All content that is created under this Mission needs to meet the following criteria:

  • It should be related to education delivery.
  • It should involve faculty from different institutions
  • All IP (Intellectual Property) created under projects funded by this Mission will vest with MHRD
  • All content should be created using open-source software.
  • All content created under this Mission is for open access by all and cannot be charged for in any way

Answering to a question, he said all materials developed under NME-ICT mission will be free and open to all citizens through Internet / VPN.

Around 21 Universities including Kalasalingam University, Veltech University, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University participated.

A-VIEW is an E-Learning platform, developed by Amrita University's E-Learning Research Lab, which is a state-of-the-art software for distance education and collaboration.
